Hiii,
I am funny to play both cello and oboe 🙂 I started with the cello five years ago, and a three-quarter year ago, with Oboe. I just wanted to play cello on halfway before I started a new instrument.
If you start a new instrument, you have to invest a lot of time at the very beginning and deepen the freshly learned well. If you want to play a second instrument, I think you should be so good with the other one that it is not that big problem if you can play less because of the new instrument. When this is the case is of course different for everyone. I have just waited for 4 years and now I have no problem with my instruments 🙂
But in principle, if you have enough time, you can start another instrument at any time. If you like it now, just do it! You can do a kind of trial time first.
Maybe you can talk to your teacher and ask him?
To the instruments: In your case, I think I would choose the cello. You already have a blowing instrument and therefore also an approach that is completely different from the oboe, so it would always be a heavy change. You can also play with the Saxofon in a band, with the cello you can play solo, orchestra or in a band. The disadvantage of the cello: you should learn to read the bass key. But that’s not a problem.
Thank you very much for the tips and especially for the hint with the changeover of one other blowing instrument. He was very helpful in my decision:)
I was happy to help;)
May I ask how you decided?
Sure! I think I’ll wait two more years and then I’d start playing cello 🙂
So I’d say if you can do 1 instrument, you could learn a second instrument.
So I’ve been waiting for the drums for a long time (+ the whole orchestral percussion stuff) to learn something. I’ve been playing drums for 9 years and only started with other instruments about 2 years ago. (Sax, E-Bass, Piano and completely new double bass)
Yes You can also learn 5 instruments at the same time. Not possible for anyone but you can always try!
So I play cello. Fun
If your decision is at all, you have the time for it, etc.
