Is the dative really wrong?

Whenever I say a sentence like: "Because of the wind" say, a friend of mine says: "That's wrong! It means 'Because of the wind.'" Is that true? Is it really wrong? I always thought the dative and genitive were both correct, but the genitive was just "better German."
