Today I looked at a Simson s50 which had two shock absorbers on each side at the back (so four in total). Has anyone done this privately, has this been done often and, above all, why was it done?

It’s not normal. The S50 / S51 are approved with the two rear shock absorbers for a total of 180kg. Either someone had transported more weight permanently or you liked it a bit harder while driving because 4 feathers then don’t spring so deep. But that’s unauthorized coup.
If the driver was a little too heavy, something has already been done, but it is not allowed.
