Should I take my Abitur or not?

Hi,

Somehow it just occurred to me why I want to graduate from high school in the first place.

I'm currently on summer vacation and in two weeks I'll be back at school and then I'll be starting 11th grade, the upper secondary school.

But why should I even get a high school diploma? If I wouldn't need it for my future career anyway? I could just do an apprenticeship, then I'd start earning money much sooner and wouldn't have to waste three years 🤷🏼‍♀️

What do you think? Is it even worth it to get your high school diploma?

My opinion: Stick with it for the next 2-3 years, and you'll have achieved something you can be proud of. I think it looks more stupid on your resume if you dropped out of high school than if you had graduated after the 10th grade.

A high school diploma gives you better opportunities, including for an apprenticeship (and maybe even a degree later on?) And you gain a lot of general knowledge and a broad education: linguistic, scientific, etc. Things that may not play a direct role, but can be helpful in certain situations.

That's a good question! In fact, many people graduate from high school because they simply go back to school after the holidays without giving it a second thought .

I could just do an apprenticeship, then I would earn money much earlier and wouldn't have to waste 3 years

Correct! However, in order to start an apprenticeship in two weeks instead of going back to school, you would have had to apply for that apprenticeship in a timely manner. This means the first answer to your question is:

  • Because you didn't bother to do anything else.

But there are still enough apprenticeships available for 2024, meaning you could still apply right now. But you won't, because of the second reason:

  • Because you have no idea what you would like to do professionally.

But you could also quickly figure that out now. Researching careers today, applying tomorrow… but that won't work either, because of the third reason:

  • You won't see the point in wasting at least two of your vacation days researching careers, writing applications, and talking to companies offering training.

And for all these reasons, you, like absolutely every other student who is not yet ready for working life, will simply go back to school after the holidays in two weeks without giving it a second thought.

  • You also have better chances at apprenticeships where a high school diploma would normally suffice. More schooling, hopefully more sensible, the Youth Employment Protection Act no longer applies, and you're more likely to have a driver's license.
  • A friend of mine trained as a financial assistant, something he wouldn't have been able to do with a high school diploma.
  • Many people later find themselves kicking themselves because they suddenly want to study, but because of their age the path to getting there is much more difficult/expensive.

Whether you should take the Abitur depends on your goals. Advantages of the Abitur include:

1. **Study opportunities**: Access to universities and degree programs.

2. **Better job opportunities**: Many jobs require a high school diploma or offer higher incomes.

3. **Personal development**: You develop important skills and knowledge.

If you're sure you're pursuing an apprenticeship and are happy with it, a high school diploma may not be absolutely necessary. Think about what you want long-term!

Depends on your future plans

Get your high school diploma. The two years more or less don't matter. Then you'll have complete freedom. Who knows, maybe you'll want to go to college in a few years. Then you'd have a problem and be making things unnecessarily complicated for yourself.
