Should I start dancing on pointe?
Hello first of all,
I'm just 15 years old, I've been dancing ballet for nine years, and I'm considering dancing on pointe. But I'm hesitant because I've heard it can really damage your feet. I don't dance ballet professionally either; I do it more as a hobby. (Once a week; if I really started pointe, it would be three times a week.)
The pictures of injured ballet feet I saw online were quite discouraging, but many people said that this only happens to professional ballerinas, not those who do it recreationally. On top of that, these shoes are a real expense. They only last 10-20 hours and cost around $100 per pair.
That's why I wanted to ask a few more experienced dancers what they think about it and whether they would generally recommend it under my circumstances.
By the way: I'm NOT asking if I'm currently ready to start dancing on pointe or if I should wait. I'm asking if I SHOULD even do it, since I don't practice ballet professionally. I know I'm not ready to start right now because I'm not "good" enough. If so, I would definitely train for it.
Thanks for your answers!
As with any sport – sports is healthy but if you exaggerate it, then not.
Ballet is basically healthy – it goes into the extreme sports area or professional area – e.g. at the top dance, then the whole looks different
You can’t make a bit of a top dance – you need to train like a professional dancer so that your foot can stop this extreme load at all. If you only do 2h ballet a week, your foot will never be strong enough for that and the risk of injury is so high
Apart from the costs. Are your parents ready to buy you new ballet shoes worth 100€ each month?

From own experience: Yes lace dance hurts, but only if you really do it a lot. It depends on how long your hours take. Every week I’ve got a ballet 1-3 times tips and about 2h, that’s very painful. In addition, you need to consider whether you want to use the time for e.g. lace shoes. But you don’t have to dance professionally that the top dance is worth it. Try it out, and if you enjoy it, keep it going. I love it:)
I wish you a nice day
Hi.
first time to me: I am twelve years old and since I am six ballet. From Tuesday, I’ll start with top dance. I asked myself the same question and came to the conclusion that I will dance on top.
We started talking about it months before. First, we would ask whether our growth has already been closed. You can just ask for this at the next quest. Then we’ve made a strength test to know if our feet hold it. We took our feet and then our top shoes were sent to our ballet school. We tested exactly whether and which model fits well with us and feels good.
I would recommend that you make such a preparation first. You can still decide if you want to start with top dance or if you want to leave it. If you do, you have to sew the satin bands. These are the bands that are so beautiful about the calf and around the shiny bone.
In your place, I would do it if your feet were strong enough. And I think so, because I’m three years younger than you.
Best regards, your Anninoko
You’ll have hurt that part if you don’t have a problem with it and your trainers can let you start with the top dance.
It’s the question of how much you want to give for it. There are also disadvantages for any sport or hobby. Look at football as they break the bones and ligaments there. That’s not better either.
If you do something with passion, you must also accept the disadvantages.
I’m Laie, but don’t worry about it. This is a professional thing. But talk to your dance teacher. He knows you, your training condition etc. And sees your feet.
Sorry but lace shoes do not only last 10-20 hours have my last 7 months a week and they are still almost as new as a beginner who last a long time! You have to dance them first and keep everything long
