Should advertising for sports betting be banned?
In Germany, there are approximately 1.3 million people who are addicted to gambling, and another 2.6 million exhibit problem gambling behavior. These figures are linked to the fates of families who have been financially ruined due to a loved one's gambling addiction.
Nevertheless, especially during sporting events, you are bombarded with advertisements from providers based in Cyprus or Malta that also hold a gambling license there. One of these providers even calls itself a premium partner of the Bundesliga.
Should advertising for gambling and betting be banned in a similar way to tobacco products?
Yes, that should happen in fact, but for the first time only at sports events. I’m gonna report this out of my perspective as a football fan.
My discord was, as some people here might know, not too long ago a third party. Sportsbooks are particularly present there. bwin, a sportsbook provider, is not only a normal sponsor of the league and some clubs, no, bwin is even printed on the sleeves under the league logo. So there is a very dangerous melange here, because football fans are very attached to their club, which is not bad from my point of view. If they now regularly see this in such a close relationship with a sports betting provider, this is not quite harmless because the psychological effect is crisp. Sportsbooks thus become a part of everyday life and normalized with sport.
It is similar to the sport show. Since I follow these regularly, I noticed that Tipico advertising is shown here in public broadcasting, also during the sports show. I’m really worried about this, as I explained in the other example.
Of course, not every person who sees advertisements for a betting provider automatically becomes playful. However, such advertising also does not belong to the direct connection with sport, i.e. also from club, association and media pages. Here, both associations and associations and media should recognize their responsibility and comply with them, at least for the easily influential fans, for example for children and such partnerships. Also betting providers are employers and participants on the market, but you should at least limit the advertising to a great extent.
I think precise clarification is more promising than just bans.
The interferences of the state are now far too far…
You should simply put the providers under penalty and prohibit withdrawals.
With minimum fines not less than 1 million euros for providers, 25 000 euros for the customers and employees of these companies.
