Set up a WiFi repeater?

Hello,

My problem is this:

Since my PC can't be connected to the home network via Ethernet, I've been using a Wi-Fi repeater for internet access, which also has an Ethernet output. There's no manufacturer listed on the device, but if you search for Wi-Fi repeater in Google Images, you'll find it directly. I've attached a picture. There are also several tutorials online for setting it up.

Unfortunately, my PC has lost internet access since today. The Wi-Fi is still working, and all other devices still have a connection. Only the repeater no longer provides a connection.

I've already unplugged the repeater and performed a reset, but the corresponding button doesn't seem to work.

Nevertheless, the first reset seemed to have some effect, as the repeater was now displayed in the network search as "WiFi Repeater" and no longer as an amplifier with my home network SSID.

So I connected to the repeater, which normally opens the browser where you can then log in to the repeater and configure it.

Here I could then select the network the repeater should connect to. Unfortunately, even after several attempts, I could see all the other networks in the house, but not my home network SSID.

Then I changed the repeater's name on this configuration page. Now I can still find it in the network search and connect to it, but the browser won't open, and I can no longer configure the repeater. Unplugging it and resetting it doesn't change anything. The repeater also retains the name I gave it.

How can I get the repeater working again?

What is the reason?

Thanks in advance!

The failure of the WLAN connection between repeater and router could have been caused by updates of the router. The routers are always set to the latest security settings and WiFi standards through automatic updates.

In your case, the repeater could be overwhelmed with the capabilities of the router Wi-Fi.

The repeater can't be WPA3, and PMF can't, I guess!

I would test the WLAN router on the configuration page compatible set:

  • only Wifi 4 (N) set at 2.4 GHz WLAN (not AX at 2.4 GHz)
  • only set Wifi 5 (AC) at 5 GHz WLAN (on Wifi 6 AX waive , does not bring much in WLAN speed)
  • Wi-Fi Security/encryption fixed on WPA2 , not WPA3
  • PMF (Protection Management Frame) in WLAN turn off
  • And autom. Bandsteering in Wi-Fi disable
  • The upper Wi-Fi channels avoid , because older/favourable (built for US market) devices do not support it. So set solid channels in the WLAN router (1.6.11 at 2.4 GHz and 36.40.44.48 at 5 GHz WLAN)

Then

  • restart the router.
  • And perform the repeater on work settings/reset (probably hold 10 seconds the reset button, and never interrupt Repeater restart!).
  • When setting up the repeater, connect NO LAN cable to the repeater. The LAN cable is only plugged in when the repeater is properly set up and also works.
  • Pay attention to the mode of operation of the repeater: Repeater and not Access Point (AP).
  • The setup of the repeater is better when it is in the same room as the router, better WLAN reception. Only later insert the repeater halfway between router and your room (longer LAN cable from repeater to PC is advantageous to have the WLAN route as short as necessary)

In general, a NONAME Repeater is set up (explained here by me):

WLAN amplifiers, how to use? (WLAN, IT, Internet connection) – good question

Good luck!

I would recommend a connection setup with WPS. Most routers still support this and the repeater shown seems to support WPS as it can be seen (button with inscription "WPS").

How to tell the repeater:

  1. Put the repeater back
  2. Place the repeater after the resetting into a socket near the router
  3. Wait a few minutes until he gets up again
  4. Activate WPS on your Telekom router: press Wi-Fi/WPS button; Instructions on the Internet
  5. Activate WPS on your repeater: WPS button usually hold for ~5 seconds until the LEDs flash
  6. Once the flashing stops, the repeater should be connected

However, if the blinking stops only after 2-3min, something has probably gone wrong.

For better help, it would be good if you could provide more information about routers and repeaters. The information is usually on a sticker on the back or bottom of the product.
