Bullshit. Why would you put the plane extra? Look at Sitka. There are land and waterways.

So I would put the plane on a (normal) airport, then press Y and put it in the water with the transfer mode…

Take and put on the water 😛 But there are also special water airports whose runways are designated accordingly
