SD card needs to be formatted / no recognized file system?
Aloha : ) I recently switched to a new smartphone, but unfortunately I don't know if this message has been appearing since I switched – I only noticed it a few days ago.
"SD card is not recognized and needs to be formatted"
Unfortunately, my old phone says the same thing, and the card reader on Windows also spits out this message. When I try to view the card's properties on my PC, I also get a message saying that no file system is recognized and I need to format it.
Well… I'd like to save the data on it before formatting it. Is there any way to do that (preferably free, since I'm broke)?
Hope you have a tip
Unfortunately late, but certainly good to know for the next time.
Photorec is meant to “recover” photos from memory cards.
https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/PhotoRec
The problem with FAT32 file system is that with each write access the folder in which the data is stored is described several times. For this purpose, the free space is also updated in the beginning of the file system.
Deleting this to describe a memory cell causes severe wear. While the card can be read as often as desired, each memory cell can be described only a few times before the broken.
That is, the memory cells where information about the file system in it is broken first, all the other data is still on it.
Photorec can reconstruct the broken data of the file system to such an extent that it can read and copy the files. It is even able to detect documents and puzzel back together without any information about the file system. Not only images but many other formats such as documents, videos, music, etc.
Not only on FAT systems, but now on all common file systems.
oh many love thanks for this great explanation. I am afraid I have no longer the card, if it still appears I will try it with it:)
And exchange the SD cards more often. Things die quickly when it’s always written on it.
There are tools to clone the cards. So you can take all data immediately without having to copy everything in a complicated way.
The cards in the mobile phone are also encrypted. They don’t work in another phone (and in the PC). With the serial number of the phone you can decrypt it on the PC, but simply “clon” is the easiest.
And with the new phone you can take a fresh card and then you have to copy everything – just because of the encryption.
This is supposed to prevent someone who steals your phone from getting the SD to your data. Encryption can be switched off, but it has been switched on as standard for a few years.
many love thanks!
Use a Linux computer, install the disktype package, insert the card into the computer, and run disktype on the SD card device. That should tell you what file systems on which and how many partitions there are, if at all.
with dd – this is already installed – you can copy the SD card completely, regardless which file system is on it.
Download DMDE and search the SD card with it. If DMDE doesn’t get any further, it’s a case for a data recovery laboratory.
