recovery?
Hey guys, I have a quick question. Before I had my eating disorder, I weighed around 50kg, but I lost weight because of my ED. I'm in recovery now and wanted to ask if my body will only recover to 50kg and then I'll be able to eat like I used to without gaining weight over every little thing! Thanks.
It is to be assumed that each person has a genetically defined normal weight (some diseases that lead to weight loss or increase excluded). With the same body size, the personal normal weight can be about 50 kilos for one person and 70 kilos or more for another person. Therefore, the BMI is not necessarily so meaningful, because it assumes that we all should have a certain ratio between body size and weight to be healthy. Everything under or above a limit is unhealthy. You can’t say that clearly.
Usually the body weight always fluctuates plus/minus a few kilos around this personal normal weight. It can only be changed if there is a very strong excess of calories or an extreme calorie deficit in food intake. Say, if a healthy person who is around his individual normal weight takes a few hundred more calories each day, this person will not increase. Otherwise I would be in the four-digit kilo range xD
But if you have an extreme calorie deficit now, you can get far below your personal normal weight. Your body is starving at this time. It may also be that you have craving attacks as your body is afraid to starve. This is a cry of help from your body that calls for food. This can be done for people (I have experienced myself) that even 1 kilo of chocolate m is fed up and the head is switched off (if this happens regularly and then you pass, the bulimia is! Never start handing you over!!!). In less extreme cases the infamous Jojo effect is created. The craving is given (which is good in itself) and the body increases mass and then you take off again by a diet etc.
People who have malnutrition should stop counting calories and making sports. All the related constraints. It is extremely difficult, but according to some reports and sources (especially from the USA, where the subject is addressed differently than in Germany, where often in therapies and clinics a wrong approach in my eyes, and almost counterproductive approach is chosen) people who are magical (or were and are not yet fully obsessive) should eat when they feel like and what they want. It may be that in the first days and weeks incredible amounts of chocolate, cookies and other things are eaten. According to theory (and practice confirms that in most cases) the body increases quite strongly in this time. Under certain circumstances also significantly more than beyond the point of the individual normal weight. This has to do with the fact that the body is encamped because it has “anxiety” that there will be too little food again. But if you continue to eat when and what you like and even if you only think of food, then your body eventually realizes that there is lasting enough jnd you automatically take off until you get to your normal weight.
I don’t know if that’s true. Whether you have cravings or not etc. But this is the subject of my view roughly described. If you are interested in this, you can look into the English-speaking books of Tabitha Farrar or in the German-speaking “Friss or Stirb”. Otherwise there are also quite large English-language reddit communities!
If you have any questions, feel free to report, I know a little something, but I’m not a psychologist or a doctor! I have read a lot about it and know directly people from my environment who have been through the same!
Your weight will slowly settle in every case, I can promise you. Maybe even somewhere under 50kg, maybe with 3kg more. Your body knows best what its ideal weight is and will work exactly on it. Just have confidence in this process and a lot of success in your recovery!!
