Read receipt Whatsapp?

Hello, I wanted to ask if if you have read a message on WhatsApp and then turn off the read receipt, the person will still see that you have read the message because you only turned off the read receipt afterwards, so all messages will only appear as unread after you turn it off, or will they still appear as unread.
