Rain cover – how long and when?
Hello,
Unfortunately, I am not that experienced yet and need your opinion
I bought a rain rug today and would like to keep it on permanently, i.e. the horse is in a stable where he is out in the pasture and outside during the day. Unfortunately the weather here is very changeable and it can snow one day and then rain the next (now in winter). I can't make it to him every day, so I can't always take it off. He's also a grey horse and likes to get wet and dirty 😉 (He isn't clipped, by the way, but his coat isn't particularly thick). I thought the rug might provide some protection.
Is it possible to leave blankets on permanently during such seasons or should they only be used on really rainy days?
thanks in advance for the answers
Huhu,
if you permanently wear an unfeeded rain blanket in winter, the horse will freeze and you will most likely also get sick.
A blanket does not necessarily press long, but always very dense winter fur plated and the air cushion between the individual hair and the skin loses its effect. The plumb is taken from its isolation. Without a ceiling, the plum puts on its fur more or less, depending on the Temepratur and the weather, and can thus react to temperature differences and always keep warm accordingly. With a ceiling you take this function and then have to take over it with different thick fillings. Covering is then necessary defictively!
So you have the choice to cover the horse correctly, with different thick blankets and several times daily cover or you leave it to the ceiling. Uncovered is healthier, simpler and cheaper and works with as good as all horses.
So I advise you to leave the blanket for emergencies or mandatory dry dates in the closet and continue to send the horse out without a blanket. It keeps itself warm and dry with its fur.
The horse does not have to be dry for riding. Also a wet horse gets clean enough that you can saddle on the wet fur. And it doesn’t have to be super clean in winter. The sand and dirt are always getting out with good cleaning, for bad discoloration there are actually good sprays, but you can also just see past the spots, something is not bad. Wet horses are not bad, you just need a little more time to clean and have to accept that it doesn’t get as clean as in summer.

No blanket. Generally, it only makes sense if you can always cover.
Because this is not possible with you, just leave him his thermoregulation.
Just do it if it really rains. And you should actually have several blankets, make a thicker at night than during the day
