Publish a book at 12 years old?

Hello, I'm 12 years old and currently writing a book. I'd like to submit it to a reputable publisher, but I'm not sure if it'll be too much work on top of school with all the editing and other work (if they'll even accept it). Does anyone have experience in this area and can help me?

The big publishers are only accessible via agencies. There are quite a lot of petitions. They are often encountered at trade fairs or cons, and can establish first contacts there. At the Leipzig Book Fair, BVjA hosts a “Meet & Greet” where you have 10 minutes to present your project to one or more publishers (this is the so-called elevator pitch).

Important: if you want to send a work somewhere (Verlag or Agency), you need to submit an exposé and a sample of reading, not the whole novel. Each publisher has information on its website as to exactly what it has to look like – and it is different from any publisher.

And as some others have written here: it is quite unlikely that you will get a publishing contract with a first piece. This usually only happens when you have met a nerve of the time or have a particularly interesting life story, so that the publisher can advertise more with the author than with the book. Each publisher gets several hundred unnecessarily sent manuscripts every week and can only give out a manageable number of books in the year – and they usually make them with the authors, with whom they have worked for a long time anyway.

I can only recommend you to continue writing and also discuss the craftsmanship of writing (language, style, hero travel, plot building). There are quite a lot of textbooks, but you also find a lot on the internet. For example,

Great to write a book!

But with regard to a publication by a reputable publisher, you better not make false hopes. This is unrealistic in the case of new unknown authors, who are not yet able to demonstrate experiences and successes. At your age.

That the own book is accepted by a reputable publisher and offered for sale in the book stores – this is the dream of thousands of hobby authors in our country. But the likelihood that this dream will come true is about the likelihood of a million gain in the lottery.

Even such geniuses like Astrid Lindgren and J.K.Rowling in their first years as authors did not manage that a publisher has accepted their works and their books have come into the bookstores.
This is how reality is at the hard-to- fight book market.

Proposals:

You can upload your book for publication on various pages on the Internet, e.g. at…

  • Wax pad
  • Fanfiction
  • Belletristica

These are pages where thousands of (young) authors publish, exchange their stories and books and gather first experiences as an author.

As a further step, you can publish your books yourself as Selfpublishing Book / eBook, e.g. via portals such as:

  • Book on Demand
  • epubli
  • Bookrix
  • Neobooks
  • Amazon Kindle KDP

And who knows what can become of you and your books sometime when you…

  • have gained more experience,
  • have written several books,
  • getting better,
  • Success at Wattpad &Co
  • might even succeed with Selfpublishing eBooks
  • with Young authors competitions take part,

Then it may be that at some point a serious publisher might have interest in your books.
But until then it is a long and difficult path that only very few create.

Anyway – lots of fun writing and great success!

Huhu,

please don’t make hopes and write the book first!

Whether it’s too much depends on all your hobbies and whether you have to learn a lot. You will know best about this 😉
It will be unlikely that your book will be taken. As a child, you don’t really have the writing and life experience you need for a very good book.

But an attempt is worth it:))

Good luck!
