I'm currently learning Russian. In some words, the о is pronounced like an o, but sometimes also like an а. For example, "heating" in Russian is обогрев (obogrev), but it's more commonly pronounced abagrev. How do I know when to pronounce something?

It’s an a or so similar if it’s untoned. Only the stressed o is an o. The emphasis in Russian is irregular, you have to learn each word yourself. The emphasis is given in dictionaries. However, the following or previous words in one sentence also have an influence on the emphasis and I have unfortunately never understood the system correctly.

In the case of concrete, the above is pronounced as an o, otherwise as an a.
Example: Корова даёт молоко. (The cow gives milk) —>Debate: Karówa dajót malakó.

The O is only pronounced as an O when it is stressed.
Otherwise always like an A.
You can’t foresee it, but with time you have a sense of it.
The words just sound wrong.
I’ve learned: the further away from the emphasis the o, the more like an a it is spoken. With moloko (milk) very clearly: Mal@kó. the @ should be in the middle between a and o.
At молоко it is pronounced as malakó. Only the last o we’re like an o, the other o’s like a a.
