Problem with external hard drive. Backup not possible. What to do?

My external hard drive probably won't last much longer. However, it contains important files, and I can't copy them to my desktop.

Whenever I try to copy it to the desktop, it loads quickly at first and then suddenly it is so slow that the transfer should take several hours.

I'm desperate and don't know what to do. Even the backup won't continue. But I don't want to lose the files.

What can I do?

Wait.

On the one hand, it is normal that external plates as long as they run in cache quickly download, and later, as soon as the cache passes, become slower. This is not a direct defect, but a normal behavior.

If the readability falls below 0.5 MB/s, it can also be due to read errors. Hard drives that no longer read their data correctly try to read the data several times until it succeeds. If it fails to ft, a software repair is tested by the hard drive to reconstruct the data mathematically. All this takes its time. So don’t get impatient.

If he needs a long time, just let him walk overnight. Better slowly than if he can’t read the data anymore. Get away from recovery programs as long as he doesn’t clear reading errors returned from files. All that your hard drive now has unnecessarily stress can lead to a total failure in the Worst case, and then only one data recovery company can help you.

EDIT (robocopy):

Insert an empty folder “Backup” on a drive. Then open the command prompt (cmd.exe) and give

robocopy F:\D:\Backup\ /V /COPY:DAT /MIR /R:5 /W:2

one. Q:\ corresponds to the source drive of the external hard drive. D:\ your target drive for backup. So adjust the parameters accordingly. The other parameters like /V tells all subfolders to copy, /R gives the number of repetitions in reading errors, and W repetitions. In the case here he tries to read a file 10 times, then he gives up and continues with the next file.

The advantage is that you can also take breaks to keep the hard drive unobserved over the night by simply sending the same command back the next day. Then, thanks to /MIR, Robocopy equals the files that are already there based on hash values (which goes very fast) and only adds missing/changed files. In the end, Robocopy gives you a result of how many files have been successfully copied and how many failed. In the best case, you have a 1:1 copy of the data structure including files from your external hard drive in the backup folder.

Yes, it is possible that it is at the end of its lifetime. But as long as she’s still copied, it’s good. Only if it stops because data is no longer readable, then you need special programs or a data recovery company.

Run for the first time.

Any repair tools or recovery programs dramatically shorten the rest of your hard drive life.

You can also use robocopy to download your data segmentally, then you can also interrupt and make pauses. Robocopy can balance data and only copy those that are missing or faulty.

Robocopy is a shell command under Windows to copy data to masses. It does not have a graphical interface, but can do much professional backup programs. It’s free on Windows. You can send the command via the command prompt and only have to give the parameters accordingly. So, your drive letters from the source drive, target drive, before the target folder is best placed on the target drive. The good thing is, you can stop this at any time by closing windows and continuing on the following day. Or even if he could not copy a few files again, so he could try the missing one again. Robocopy actively copies only what is not at the target folder (in fact it makes a 1:1 copy, it copies what is missing, copies what has changed, and deletes files at the target drive that are no longer present at the source record, real backup hold) by the parameter /MIR

I pinned the Robocopy variant into the answer. You can continue it at any time because it no longer copies existing files.

See if there are special programs that can read several (possibly defective) sectors. Otherwise, you only remained to give the record to a company specializing in data recovery – this is probably not cheap.

Edit: Beforehand, you should rule out that your problems lie on a defective cable or a bad connection to the external panel.

Have you ever tried to copy very few data at once?

How big is the plate and are there many small files?

How high is the transfer rate?

We use the small software to check the state of all hard drives.

Information

Are these many small files (pictures)?

How are you going? Move to an external second?

They need a long time, I’m always moving them in stages.

Tip: With DiskInfo64 always let the hard drives check from time to time. We went to all the stations here and some of us had to clone early.
