POP3, IMAP, where is this specified; in the email program or with the provider?

If an email account is operated as an IMAP account, is this a setting with the provider or in the email program on the computer?

Background:

I had previously set up my account as a POP3 account in Outlook, and then later switched to Thunderbird and set the account there as IMAP. I somehow thought this was a setting within Thunderbird, and not a change to the account with the provider.

So, I thought you could access the same email account with different computers and different email programs, sometimes using IMAP and sometimes using POP3. But that doesn't seem to be the case, does it?

What access protocol you use is set in the email program. In some e-mail providers, you have to activate the respective access protocols beforehand in their settings and/or additional settings can be made there, such as which folders are to be retrieved via POP3.

You can also use POP3 on one device and on another IMAP. Here you have to check which settings have been made in the respective email program. For example, you can set the emails completely downloaded and then deleted from the server. This is counterproductive when using multiple devices. As a rule, however, it is recommended to use the same access protocol on all devices.

It’s the same account. POP3 or IMAP describes only the communication protocol. So both providers also have to master one of them. You may be able to set the protocol to the account.

At Thunderbird, you will give it when you enter the email account.

With your provider e.g. WEB.de you have to unlock it beforehand on the Hompage (where you retrieve your emails).
