Study physics but afraid you won't make it?
Hello, I am a girl, 17 years old and I am in the 12th grade (out of 13).
I'd like to study physics, but honestly, I don't think I'll make it. While I'm taking physics and math as advanced courses, and they're going pretty well, I have a few gaps in math, albeit a little, due to my previous teachers (I had two teachers for six years who couldn't teach).
I'm also scared because I don't have any knowledge of computer science or technology. I mean, I can use my cell phone and stuff, but that's about it. And most physics jobs require technology, so I'm wondering if you need any knowledge to minor in computer science during your studies?
My mother discouraged me a bit earlier and said that I don't have much of a grasp of physics and mathematics because I have to study a lot for my advanced classes.
All of this scares me because all I know is that I want to work in physics research, but I really don't have the confidence to do it.
Heyy, I’m studying physics in the 3rd. semester, in general, perseverance is the most important, everything else will be as well, especially if you are quite good in Mathe (Hatte im Abi in Mathe written 8P and in physics written 5P and still pass through, but before that was always quite good in school: 1 in Mathe, upper level and in physics also and upper level, also with the exception of Abi).
Generally, Uni-Mathe and Physics are a completely different world than the schoolman, you actually learn what you need in university. You go to university to learn something, not to be able to do it, the most important thing is that you have an interest in it, just trust if it doesn’t fit, you can always change to something else, but don’t give up immediately before you try it:) So don’t let you demotivate people who haven’t studied it yourself! 🙂 In general, those from the older semesters always say: you can’t understand everything in physics and that’s okay, you didn’t study physics, if you weren’t even despairing and didn’t understand anything, haha, the true physics students usually have no idea, that’s part of physics studies, but iwann you understand some xD many professions but also have no idea of areas outside their research area
You don’t need any understanding of computer science and technology as long as you know how to use a laptop is enough;) The rest you learn in the university, had only one module for programming with C++ and Python, but we learned everything from the bottom up and from the lightest things. And you can still do computer science if you want it.
Generally, our studies look like this:
– Exercise sheets every week in each module that we have to give up to a specific day of the week and there we have to at least on all leaves. 50% of the total number of points to be admitted to the exam (e.g. 2-10h depending on the difficulty level, but you usually solve it quite quickly: TEAMWORK IS THE A AND O IM PHYSIKSTUDIUM) and it is ok to weep over the exercise leaves, which makes every xD
– Lectures where not everyone goes because the script and even understand sometimes is better than wasting time for the lecture, I personally usually don’t find it helpful, come better alone at home xD Gives a few good professions where I go because it’s funny, and some show so cooole experiments, our one Prof has sometimes set himself on such a rocket and is in front of the university
– There is also a tutorial for each module (subject duty), where the solutions for the exercises are shown and in which you usually have to precalculate 2x per semester
– had also a laboratory internship: there we were in the laboratory where every week in a two-group gets a new experiment you work on and there is a protocol at home (about 5-20 pages depending on the topic), my laboratory partner and I have changed each week and so it was quite relaxed, in general, the internships are fun
– exam phases: the worst gray, usually one learns completely for 3 weeks a day and has to each module ne Klausur (I’m just in there 🙁 ), but in all cases there is also a postwriting date 🙂
– Biggest tip: Make more during the semester, so when a chapter is finished, to summarize immediately, my mistake was often in the 1st and 2nd semesters that I have pushed a lot to the exam phase and then it became stressful;-; andddd concentrate especially on math (this is the hardest)
You usually have less spare time than an economic student, but my spare time is perfect because physics is fun (even if it can sometimes drive me crazy and bring me to cry xD)
In general, I can say that I find some exaggerated with the cause that physics is spoken so big. With me everyone reacts so shocked and impresses what I am studying, you feel really stupid xD The main thing is simply that you have a certain interest in it and accept that you will also be desperate and not know everything. I think about breaking it off once a day, like every physics student, especially the first two semesters are bad, but then it becomes more relaxed, you get used to it, so just try it out 🙂
Hi, at which university did you study physics?
At the Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main:) But since then I have actually changed to biophysics, I found more interesting 🙂
First super cool that you want to study physics 🙂 And I don’t think it makes an extremely big difference to what university you’re going to, but just read well: read the university’s study/examination regulations in physics, see which modules there are and which differences in the university, also see which centers the university has in terms of research and what interests you there and which elective subjects are offered. And also read reviews on the subject of study physics at the university on study check, as it is often explicitly addressed to the university and the organization there. Then you can see what you like better. And otherwise, look what city you like to study there, what there is to see how it lives there 🙂 In Frankfurt, I personally find the study program super organized (also the whole online and soo), I also like that you have the big city feeling, but also the more remote location from the campus Riedberg, and we have a physics learning center where you get help at any time 👍🏻 If you have further questions, please write. Success in your project ✨
How cool!! Consider at the moment what university I should go (for physics studies), I would really like to go to Heidelberg, but I heard that it should be harder than at other universities, so the question. I’ve been thinking about Frankfurt. Let’s watch
I can only advise you from my own experience: ask yourself what is the subject that interests me and in which I want to work in my life and have fun.
Don’t let others influence you that it’s nothing anyway…
It’s your life, it’s your interests, and you have to do something about it.
Why I say this to you: When I was at your age, I was interested in electrical engineering and high-frequency technology, the parents were opposed and I should learn a craft, because “Akademiker” is enough.
My will was broken, but I was always unhappy, but with 30 years I threw the towel and studied my subject and got a great conclusion. Today I live and work in my wish occupation in Japan.
Yeah, and it’s true, the wrong teachers can ruin a lot, so I had some during my school.
There hasn’t been a master of heaven yet, but preparation courses are offered, Mathe was also my anxiety, but it’s definitely going to make a good conclusion here if you hang in a little.
Computer science was a Klack for me, it’s as good as zero, then the ISO/OSI model, binary calculation and the HEX payment system and then probably programming, was with me the C and C++.
You have a goal in mind, a goal in a field that interests you, then the incentive is there as if you are influenced somewhere by others, which you do not want.
Even if it turns out that it was the wrong choice. Our educational system offers a variety of possibilities, you just have to use them.
If you want to study physics and do not have problems with mathematics, do it.
You can even study without a physics course because everything starts at zero anyway. you don’t have to worry that you can’t do anything. If you had to be able to do everything before, what would the study be there? of technology and informatics, you don’t have to know as long as you can use a computer normally.
only in mathematics, you should do the school material well (more than this you need at the beginning but also not) because otherwise the danger exists at the beginning perhaps to be “hanged” when the first weeks are quickly released. if you think you’re going to get stuck here then try to close it before. take a mathematic book from the class where the substance is missing from the summer. many universities offer a mathe-preliminary course (one or two weeks) even before the actual start of the study, perhaps this would also be something for you.
No one (even your mother not, about which I now better not write about what I think about her if she rather discourages her children instead of helping them) knows how you will ultimately go to study. I don’t, of course. only one thing is guaranteed: if you don’t even begin, you will never do it.
Talk with a teacher or with your parents if there is another subject you can better choose something else
But only physics interested me
And only that is relevant to the career choice.
A parent house where you’re discouraged is a place that makes you sick. Go away there as soon as you can. Start strengthening your mental immune system right now. This is even more important than the choice of the training path.
Any gaps in knowledge, like all people, will always have your life. Many will fill you, and others will do so. This is completely normal and no reason to fear, because we have the curiosity and joy of research. Physics and technology are just because people want to take it with the gaps. So start loving the gaps. Each of them is an invitation to a journey of discovery. Enjoy it!
