Paraphrasing a quote within a quote?
I don't mean quoting quotations, but rather paraphrasing.
For example, if I have a text by John Doe and it contains a quote from Klaus König, how should I paraphrase it? Normally, I would write "John Doe explains that…", but should I now write "Klaus König explains that…"? Or should I write something like "John Doe writes that Klaus König said…"?
We (10th grade) were taught that when paraphrasing you don't put sources in parentheses, which is why I can't write (Max Mustermann after Klaus König).
If in the text of Patternmann there is a literal quote from King, and it is actually about the point of view of King, then I would try to find the original text of King and quote directly.
If this is not possible, but you want to summarize the point of view or argument of King, then you write “Klaus König argues that…” and then write into the footnote “according to Max Mustermann, …”
Or you can actually call both:
“Max Patternmann summarizes the position of Klaus König as follows: “
or
“According to Max Mustermann, it was king who first postulated xy:…”
