Why am I so terrified of severe thunderstorms when I'm inside a house or car, but not when I'm outside? Where could this panicky fear even come from?

Phobie. Irrational. Must understand that thunderstorm is not dangerous at all in the house or KFZ.
Maybe it’s the desperate search for protection. While you are in the house or in the car, you are already safe and have no further possibility to escape.
However, if you are outside, you know that there is a place (e.g. house or car), where you can escape when it becomes too creepy.
