NVMe: which version should I use?
Hello,
Some M.2 SSDs support the NVMe standard 1.4, others version 2.0, etc. However, I can only find information about the corresponding motherboards stating whether or not NVMe is supported. It doesn't say which version the motherboard is compatible with.
Can someone please explain this to me?
Is it possible that an NVMe-compatible motherboard always supports every version?
Thank you very much in advance. 🙂
Here is an extract from English Wikipedia:
“Architecturally, the logic for NVMe is physically stored within and executed by the NVMe controller chip that is physically co-located with the storage media, usually at SSD. Version changes for NVMe, e.g., 1.3 to 1.4, are incorporated within the storage media, and do not affect PCIe-compatible components such as motherboards and CPUs.”

So the motherboard just needs to support NVMe and is good. The NVMe controller chip together with the corresponding logic is accommodated on the storage medium, i.e. in our case on the M.2-SSD. NVMe version changes refer only to the storage medium itself, but not to, for example, motherboards and CPUs.
