Apply for a new ESTA while staying?

Hello, I had to apply for an ESTA last year because I had a stopover in Chicago on my way from Mexico. Now I'm flying to New York. When I applied for an ESTA last year, I had to indicate that it was for transit. Since this time it's for a stopover, here's my question: The ESTA is still valid and can still be used, but since it was stamped for a transit, can I still use it for this year's stay, or do I need to apply for a new one?
Thank you in advance!

You can edit your Esta on the official page and change your details. I strongly suspect you can say that you are staying in the USA and not just going through.

In any case, you can specify your first address in the USA and that actually results in that you are not only transit.

The esta is still valid and can still be used

Yes, if the passport has not changed and its name is not, it is valid.

since it was stamped for a passage,

It was stamped on entry. Whatever it was, it doesn’t matter if you continue or stay.

can I still use it for this year’s stay or do I have to apply for a new one?

You can use it to travel to the USA.

thanks in advance

Sure.
