My little Smart doesn't like it anymore?
Hello car mechanics,
I drive a 20-year-old Smart. A few days ago, it just stopped while I was driving and wouldn't start anymore.
After about 30 minutes of waiting, it started again – joy –
He drove for 10 km, then gave up again. This game has been repeated over and over again since then. About 10 km, then the end, the battery is new. It's really annoying, I can't use the car anymore. I took it to the garage – Mercedes, ridiculously expensive.
They assumed it was the alternator (they weren't sure).
But the Lima would cost around €1,000. Given its age, it wouldn't be worth it, so they suggested scrapping it.
The Smart has no rust, low miles, and has been running perfectly. And now this…
Since I desperately need a car, I bought an old Fiat Panter. Does anyone have any technical tips on what else I could check or test? Otherwise, the car would only be worth spare parts.
I ask for information and support.
Kind regards – Christa
This sounds honestly for me after a defective tank escape.
You're driving, then he's going out and only after some waiting he's going on?
This is actually an absolutely typical mistake!
The engine consumes fuel from the tank, into the tank (if tank venting is broken) no air will come behind, so a vacuum will arise. At some point, the vacuum in the tank is so large that no fuel can flow out of the tank.
If you wait 10min, he'll get some air back somewhere, some fuel can come out of the tank and the engine starts. After some km, the game is repeated.
Doesn't it sound a fucking mess?
Your job now: You're driving your smart couple round your place until it goes out, then you turn up the tank cover and see if there's a lot of vacuum inside (he'd go harder and make a "flap" sound when you get it up.
If so, you have your mistake.
I would have gone in the direction.
But great that there are such competent Mercedes workshops. (The Mercedes House just wanted to sell a new car)
So I'm your opinion. Error image is typical of it.
If it has jumped on the battery enough charge so in my opinion it is not on the LiMa
Drive to an independent workshop, which not only tap into the blue, but also read out the error memory (if Smart was already so far) or go to troubleshooting
by the way, I looked after an AT-LiMa diet with no 450€
Does the car just stop while driving or stop at a traffic light?
The Smart has the generator and starter in one component. As far as your model is concerned, I don't know, but that could be the mystery solution.
Simply like that, during the ride….(about after 10 km drive, then he goes back, then again approx. 10 km good, then out again etc…
Then the generator is actually unlikely.
if the little one jumps, it can NOT be the Lima that would no longer charge the battery.
what is displayed in the ad, error message?

I got it
I agree with the opinion of tank ventilation. That sounds like it.
The car house simply has no dock on it to repair the box that only wants to sell new cars.
Open the tank lid when the box is out. When he sucks through the opening, you know what to say
What are they doing with the lighting machine?
Sorry, but are you sure that you were in a car workshop and not with a baker, butcher, gardener, painter, etc?
This kind of thing sounds to me after abscess.
What does the fault store say? Definitely someone in the circle of friends has an OBD2 reader
The guess about Lima seems to me extremely adventurous – if the Lima is not, the battery is no longer charged and it is after a while end with funny but lasting.
Of course, larger investments in a 20-year-old smart are hardly even profitable. In any case, you could ask for a competent free workshop, which is the cause of the problem.
I had been getting to the control unit
