Do the 10 years of residence in Switzerland have to be consecutive when applying for naturalization?

What if, for example, I lived in Switzerland for three years and then went abroad (for five years, for example) and then returned to Switzerland? Do the three years count toward the 10 years of residence, or do I have to complete the 10 years in one go?

The federal government’s website only says:

"Federal law requires at least 10 years of residence in Switzerland, including 3 years within the last 5 years prior to submitting the application."

If you take this as it stands, then it cannot mean “on a piece”.
