If you are in tax class 3, do you really always have to file a tax return and then always pay back a lot of money?
Good evening dear community,
You know the famous saying "I'm only getting married because of the tax benefits!"
I'm married and have been considering switching to tax bracket 3. After some online research, however, I'm not sure. It says that if you change your tax bracket to 3, you always have to file a tax return from then on, and in tax bracket 3, you always have to pay back a lot of money. But then it wouldn't really be a tax advantage. I did the math with an online calculator. It would say that after filing my tax return, I would have to pay back almost €4,000, essentially annually. Could that be true?

The tax advantage consists of so-called spouse splitting.
Does the combination make 3/5 sense?
If the monthly savings considered year is greater than the annual refund in tax class 4 the combination does not make any sense, because it will come to repayments.
When does 3/5 make sense?
I don’t have more reasons for the tax class combination. Due to the obligation to pay if there is an employment relationship, many quickly increase the repayments, which usually hurt so well.
In addition, it may seem useful for the individual to change the tax classes in the parental allowance cover in order to have more in the month, but this is again a reversal since the parental allowance and tax class 3 can quickly lead to very sensitive repayments.
You are only obliged to make an income tax statement at tax class 3 if your spouse has also earned wages and was taxed according to tax class 5. Section 46 (1) No. 3a Income Tax Act.
