Does the location have to be specified in full?

I changed schools a few years ago, and they didn't include the "am…" suffix for my birthplace because my teacher at the time apparently didn't think it was that important. Since then, my report cards haven't had this suffix on them, and I wanted to ask if that's a problem and if I should go to the school office about it. I thought that since I'm in high school now, maybe I should get it changed, but I don't know if it's actually that important or if my teacher at the time was right. At my old school, the full place name was always given.
