Motorcycle air or water cooled?

You can only answer that with a tendency. There are very small engines with water cooling (for example a Yamaha Neo’s 50i 4T), and comparatively large with wind cooling (for example a Honda CB 1100). It seems to me to be less concerned with the technical necessity (followingly, the vast majority of 50 engines are blow-cooled at the same performance, and not water-cooled motorcycle engines with more than one liter of engine capacity are very rare), but more on the preference of the respective designer. The higher the liter capacity, and the greater the displacement, the more water cooling is used.

At the technical level, it should be noted that a speed cooling has its disadvantages, for example in the dam – there is a risk of overheating. In the case of water cooling, an electric fan is switched on at some point, or it runs mechanically permanently at engine speed – just as in the case of fan cooling, which is usually found in motor scooters, with or without cooling water. However, there are also disadvantages in terms of exhaust gas values and noise emissions, because the heat-insulating and sound-insulating water jacket around the combustion chambers is missing. Such a machine cools out faster at standstill, usually has an inhomogeneous temperature distribution, and runs more mechanically.

Most motorcycles are currently being water-cooled on the market.

Even the BMW Boxers are no longer air cooled. The whole thing has to do with the power yield and also the exhaust gas values.
In water cooling, you tend to have a lower overheating risk and the temperature can be better controlled.

The only brand (which seems so spontaneous) that builds really large air-cooled engines is Harley Davidson. However, these motors also have comparatively little power.

In the meantime, more and more engine families are switched to water cooling because otherwise the performance and exhaust gas values can no longer be improved. e.g. the 1200 BMW Boxer.

However, engines with a moderate liter capacity still come with air cooling. e.g. the Ducati Monster 797

Up to 500 ccm are most air-cooled, and over 500 ccm water-cooled.

No, it’s not.
