Monitor broken?

I have a Gigabyte M28U. The screen suddenly goes black when I'm playing games or just in the desktop menu. Then I get a message saying the HDMI signal is lost, meaning nothing is connected, even though everything is connected properly. I've only had this problem since yesterday; otherwise, everything worked perfectly for months. If the monitor no longer shows a signal, then no signal comes out unless I restart the PC by pressing a button, which is obviously not the best way to turn the PC off. What should I do?

Check the cables and test the monitor on another device, such as a laptop, to narrow down the problem. Technically, there could be a lot of things going on in the chain, from the graphics card to the monitor. Here's testing from simple to complicated. Don't forget Marzipanspeck's tip about the processor's integrated graphics card, if the processor has one.

Check the cable connection. If not, try a different cable and/or display port on both the monitor and GPU. If you also have an iGPU, connect the monitor there. Otherwise, you might want to reinstall the graphics driver or reset the monitor. On the other hand, there could be a technical defect somewhere.
