Mobile number and WhatsApp number do not belong to the same person?

Until yesterday, I was messaging and video calling someone on WhatsApp, but they're no longer responding. I saw them, so they exist!

For the past 24 hours, messages have only been given a check mark, meaning they are not going through.

I contacted the same number via text message and received a response. The person claims not to be the person from WhatsApp. Is this realistic, or am I being scammed?

that can happen if you change handynumber but whatsapp has not changed.
