Programming with Java on Chromebook?

I have a Chromebook and can't get a laptop for my studies right away. We're starting with the programming language Java in our studies. Can I easily install Java on a Chromebook? If so, how? Is programming on a Chromebook different than on a "real" laptop?

Depending on the specific Chromebook, there is the possibility for Linux applications on the device.

Under Linux you can easily develop Java applications. There are also good Integrated Development Environments (IDE) that bring a code editor and all necessary tools for development.

Because you don’t have a plan, it probably won’t be such a good idea. Maybe there are also fellow students, tutors or professors who help to set up ChromeOS.

Even if it is not so beautiful, you can also program Java programs via the browser.

You can also just see if there are computers in your university/high school that you can use to practice. The relevant software should already be installed.

If you have a computer at home, you can also practice there and take good care and make relanted notes during the lecture.

If there should be practical units on site, computers, we mentioned above will also be provided.

Technically, however, you can usually be chromebook-specked laptops, among other things the hardware is also picked up. can be that some tools don’t even run.

write and run a basic hello world or from me a calculator should not be a problem

ah daachte bit pre-experience is present. best look at a tutorial but to summarize:

java development kit install (I recommend adoptium.net)

Write code in a text file and save data

open console

with javac and java command in the console to compile and execute the text file

Java also runs on a coffee machine. Well, that’s it. https://so-gang-chromebook.de/chromebook-tutorial/programming-on-chromebook-chrome-os/

My tip to save money looks for a Refurbished Laptop. I’ve had good experiences with the Delwi Remarketing devices so far. Then you put a Linux (I use mint) on it and can start without any problems. And you have normal hardware, etc. I don’t know what you want to program.

After Java basically runs on a virtual machine (JVM), you can actually run java on any device, so briefly: Yes.

Yeah, I guess you should.

Here is a guide to how to install everything necessary: https://so-gang-chromebook.de/chromebook-tutorial/programming-on-chromebook-chrome-os/

I would still get a device to install a fully-fledged OS in your place.
