Methylphenidate replacement?

Hello,

I have ADHD and my doctor has prescribed methylphenidate tablets (Medikinet). Since I don't like these tablets because of the side effects, I'd like to try a substitute that's not covered by the German Federal Drug Law (BMG). Are there any good ones, or does anyone have experience with them?

When I asked my doctor about it, he just said that these tablets were the only option, but I can't imagine that happening, as there is ALWAYS an alternative.

In addition, all medicines and especially psychopharmacists can have side effects. Whether they fall under the BTM law or not.

For the treatment of ADHD, concretely 4 active substances are approved:

  • Lisdexamfetamine (LDX): LDX is under the trade name Elvanse sold and is considered the most effective and also best tolerated drug for the treatment of ADHD. The amphetamine with controlled release of active substance is strongly simplified. However, the problem is the increased potential for abuse and addiction and a certain development of tolerance in regular consumption. LDX is classified as an anesthetic.
  • methylphenidate (MPH): MPH is sold under various trade names. Ritalin, Medikinet, Concerta…to name only the most famous. MPH originates like LDX from the group of stimulants, but is not an amphetamine. It is considered very effective and is also classified as an anesthetic. There is a certain potential for abuse. The development of addiction is rather rare if the medical prescription is observed.
  • Guanfacin: Guanfacin is under the trade name Intunive sold. Unlike LDX and MPH, it is not classified as an agent. Guanfacin is a so-called mirror medication that needs to be taken daily to be effective. The actual effect results only after 1-3 weeks. Guanfacin is considered to be a little less effective compared to the anesthetic, there is no potential for abuse and addiction. The compatibility is very different from person to person.
  • Atomoxetin: Atomoxetin is under the trade name Strattera distributed, generics are also available. Atomoxetin is also a mirror drug which is not classified as an anesthetic agent. Values similar to Guafacin (entry, likelihood, missing misuse/search potential etc.). However, the effectiveness is considered to be somewhat weaker than Guanfacin, which, however, does not say anything about the individual case.

All medicines mentioned here are subject to prescription.

Hope could give you a brief overview…

Side effects can be IMMER in tablets. BTM or not.

I also had a lot of problems with Medikinet, how about changing brand? I currently take methylphenidat from ratiopharm that I find better

An alternative would be Strattera, but there are also many side effects. A minimum of 4 weekly dosing is necessary and not helps everyone.

I can’t judge the extensions of your doctor.

  • Here is a small list of ADHS medications
  • methylphenidat (trade names, for example, Medikinet, Concerta, Ritalin and correspondingGeneric)
  • Atomoxetin (trade name Strattera)
  • Dexamphetamin (trade name Attentin)
  • Lisdexamfetamine (trade name Elvanse)
  • Guanfacin (Intuniv)

But I suppose all of them need to be moved by doctors.
