The first Audi A3 was launched in 1996 and the series ran until 2003. Certainly no car without mistake, but in itself one of the more reliable cheap cars. The technique is relatively solid, only the automatic transmissions are not so the hit – the most demanding 1.6-liter four-cylinder with 100 hp is. The TDI doesn’t make any sense, probably also at the end (stitchword kilometer-eaters), the various 1,8-liters are often also controversial. Mostly a well-maintained old A3 is the 1.6-liter. Technically, the compact Ingolstadter with the Golf IV, whose base he took in 1996, is identical (and the first Skoda Octavia as well as Seat Toledo and Leon as from 1998) and also shares some weaknesses with them, especially in the undercarriage area, as well as the toothed belts that should be changed penibly. Rust can be a problem, is care-related. Later models (Facelift) I have seen as more rusty.

If you still find a well maintained Audi A3 of the first series with not so many previous owners (first hand best) and checkbook, why not. I would not spend much more than 2500 euros. The five-door arrived only with the revision to the summer of 1999 and remained relatively rare. Know of the series some owners, all of whom have been quite satisfied for years, a former student had even three Audi A3 of the first series in succession because he was so enthusiastic.
