https://www.tagesschau.de/wirtschaft/verbraucher/hausgrille-getreideschimmelkaefer-lebensmittel-eu-101.html

Sind Insekten in Lebensmitteln die Antwort auf steigende Preise für tierische Proteine und Fette und sind sie eine Chance auf eine umweltschonende Nahrungsquelle? Und ist der EU-Markt bereit für diese Neuerung?

The introduction of insects in food can be useful for several reasons. Here are some of the main arguments:

  1. Sustainability: The production of insects as feed uses less land, water and energy compared to the production of meat from traditional animal species. Insect farming also produces fewer greenhouse gases.
  2. Nutrition physiology: insects contain high-quality proteins, vitamins and minerals suitable for human consumption.
  3. Globalisation: In many parts of the world, insects are an important part of traditional food and offer a cheaper alternative to traditional protein sources such as meat.
  4. Diversity: The introduction of insects as food can contribute to a greater variety of available foods and help people to make their diet more varied and healthier.

However, it is important to note that there are also some potential challenges in the introduction of insects in food, such as hygienic concerns and the fact that not all consumers will be friends with this kind of food. It would therefore be important to ensure that insect breeding and processing takes place under hygienic conditions and that appropriate regulation with regard to the use of insects in food is in force.

Because of their high protein content, it is already sensible. I’ve been eating somewhere else for years. I don’t have to eat a flourworm or a yeast spread throughout, but processed as a flour additive for certain products, I can imagine. Most of them would not even notice it, as the ingredients lists on the packaging are very small and unclear. In addition, names are chosen (probably Latin), which hardly anyone understands anyway.

Found and copied on T-online:

Which foods already contain insects?

Even if the newly approved products are assigned to the “Novel Foods” (new foods), the idea is not new. Insects have been used for a long time in food production – the most famous example is the dye E 120, the “red carmine”.

It consists of boiled and crushed scarlet leaves, from which a red dye is obtained, which is often used in the food, but also in the cosmetics industry.

In these products, according to the comparison portal “Codecheck” the dye is used inter alia:

  • Trolli “Saure light bulb”
  • m&m’s “Crisp”
  • Ehrmann “Obstgarten Strawberry”
  • Muller “Müllermilch Kirsch-Banane”
  • Mentos: Chewing gum “Full Fruit”

The rubber lacquered glass, or its resin-like excretions, are also used as “schel lacquer” in the food industry. In the ingredients list, the fabric is often listed as E 904. As a coating, shellac is used in candy, chocolate, nuts, coffee beans and food supplements.

In these products, Schellack is used inter alia:

  • Ferrero “Children Chocolate Bons”
  • Milka “Bunte Cocoa Lenses”
  • Mentos: Chewing gum “Pure White”

Especially E 120 is controversial. On the one hand, the dye can cause allergic reactions. In addition, the dye is also used in vegan and vegetarian products, for example to dye analogues and sausages. Many vegans and vegetarians criticize this because the products are no longer purely plantable by using carmine or shellac.

You should eat the food that seems normal with us.

There will always be people who want to eat special offers for their needs.

You can do that. In China, for example, dogs are considered delicacies.

Let the special gourmets eat worms and insects.

Congratulations and good appetite, for dizziness!

a big step towards minimizing greenhouse gas emissions

There is probably the wish of Father of thought. I can’t even see a big step. The proportion of insects in food will remain in the lowest percentage range. I find such fleas and hiding behind climate talk really bad.

a readily accessible and excess protein, vitamin and fiber source

Well, there’s a lot to beautified. How many nutrients will actually return to insects in the finished products, one has to study concrete and realistic individual cases.

Are insects in food the answer to rising prices for animal proteins

Maybe. They’d be cheap in mass production. How environmentally friendly production is really, you have to see.

And is the EU market ready for this innovation?

I’m skeptical, but I guess the industry will try it for cost reasons and the environmental cover is helping to increase acceptance.

but are equipped with an allergy note

This is the central problem: How well digestible and tolerated insect products are really, has not yet been studied intensively. It is quite obvious that insects will also cause problems. Here it is necessary to proceed very carefully and be closely observed.

Many other substitutes, which have been praised as miracle agents, do not really prevail.

It should not be forgotten that food is not only food, but also must and must be enjoyment.

Nuja, in some, for example, Asian countries (I know that from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam) insects are a very normal part of the diet or a “usual” snack. And there is plenty of experience that there are no special problems regarding your concerns to be expected.

Well, I doubt very much that those countries have so sophisticated health systems and life expectancy that one can compare it with the German standard.

beamer05

I don’t have to compare health systems.

What problems are you facing?

Food allergies – usually occur very quickly, and have encountered a rather individual problem (and at least in my numerous conversations and contacts in the above-mentioned countries not intact.

Life expectancy is lower than in the case of us (hygiene, working conditions, malnutrition). There is a low-cost protein supplier.

hoermirzu

We also do not know very long that many foods that are always more readily available do not necessarily promote health, increase life expectancy.

Have fun growing exotic specialities!

What I actually want to say, on the one hand, we deliberately destroy insects, also the useful bees, in order to squeeze out yields from ever larger monocultures, on the other hand, we want to cultivate possier locusts, barbecues and co. industrially for consumption.

beamer05

?

What does the health system have to do with the enjoyment of foods that are still uncommon with us, but in some of the world’s regions are “normal” for a long time?

And, for example, in some areas in Cambodia, fried bird spiders are offered as small delicacies.

Just because “we” don’t know something from our own experience (still) ….

Aliha

We will have to get used to the fact that insects will be part of our food. For environmental and other reasons, this also seems sensible.

Yes, it makes sense. Many people don’t care what they eat, it doesn’t matter if there’s insect meat, donkey meat or cheap bark in the lasagna. The taste comes mainly from artificial taste. And insect meat is more environmentally friendly to produce.

In principle, I have nothing to do with the approval of insects as food, but I would like a clear labelling. Who already looks at the ingredients list and realizes that a Latin name is insects?

I will certainly not consciously consume food with insects, but since I do not look at any ingredients lists, this could happen quite accidentally, especially if manufacturers will use insects as cheap ingredients in the future.

Plants usually contain pesticides. The only drawback.

The 2017 season’s data evaluation shows, among others: An average apple plantation was treated 38 times with pesticides.

Rheinflip

I think this is a mistake. Insects are actually only important for certain proteins in animal food, which can hardly be produced otherwise. I see, however, that today, without the detour of animals, we can gain food for humans from plants. The various fast food snacks can now be produced superbly, which taste not only as good as the model but even better.

In the long term, we have to stop growing and eating animals for luxury needs. It just doesn’t work ecologically anymore

I hope there will soon be a natural-identical milk that allows all the possibilities of cheese preparation one to one and also natural-identical egg. dDann we actually only need the cows to puff and pluck the chickens away to the snail.

Absolutely! It’s totally normal in many countries. All kinds of insects, also scorpions, spiders etc. In the NL the bugs have long since. Had le there. Year a Bugs Bat

It is here, for example, bee honey with leach excretion (Meltau), forgotten, Chitin also. There’s no one saying anything 🙂

As you said, healthy, ecologically sensible, proteins. Raised ecle and everything new is here first disgusting, anti, spinning etc. Until the first dare to find it well, the next have increased their coolness factor. Was also stupid at Veggis, then trend and today totally normal

I think it’s gonna be similar. Is declared everywhere, so no problem

Once again, a huge barrel is opened, for such little 🙂 try and decide yourself, dare you. Does everything people stand up for, discuss, etc? Still not right again.

Lev 11,21From these small animals with wings and four feet you can eat those who have jump legs to bounce on the ground.

Levy 11,22From them you can eat the various kinds of walking dirt, the Solam, the Hargol and the Hagab hay terror.

Lev 11,24On these animals you defile yourselves; every one that touches Aas becomes unclean until evening.

But I think you will. The insects are ground small and, for example, mixed in proportion to the flour. In every bread that you eat or eat. It could be in there. Tastefully it will probably not even make a big difference.

Except you know the exact ingredients and the meaning of it.

Also believe that most producers will jump on this train and also partially process insects.

But I don’t have a bock to eat and I’ll try to avoid it. But if you go out to eat, it probably happens quickly
