Math experts, movement problems with 2 variables?

Hello ,

I'm currently studying for a math exam on systems of equations. However, I'm not making any progress on this task.

A hike is 39 km long. Two hikers set off at 9 and 10 a.m., respectively. They meet at 1 p.m. If they had set off at the same time at 10 a.m., traveling 0.5 km/h faster, they would still be 3 km apart at 1 p.m. Determine the speeds.

Thanks to everyone who wants to help me (PS. The first person to answer me will get the most helpful answer because I am pressed for time (but only if the person can figure out 6&5 km/h)

You make a equation:

* v1 + 3 * v2 = 39

At the meeting point the first hiker was 4 hours traveling at speed v1, the second hiker was 3 hours traveling at speed v2. Together they travelled 39 km.

3 * (v1 + 0.5) + 3 * (v2 + 0.5) = 39 – 3

If both of you leave at 10 a.m., both of you are on the way. The speed is 0.5 km/h higher. Since they are 3km apart, they have laid 39km-3km = 36 km back together.

The second equation forms you to

* v1 + 1.5 + 3 * v2 +1.5 = 36

* v1 + 3 * v2`= 33

v1 + v2 = 11

Now you have a simple linear equation and can calculate v1 and v2.
