Set variables for the first time:

v…Old of the Father

s…Old of the Son

The father is now twice as old as his son

That means if you double the age of the son, that is the same as the age of the father, so:

2 = v

10 years ago, he was three times as old

10 years ago the father was so old: v-10

And the son was so old at that time: s-10

And the age of the father was three times the age of the son, so:

3(s-10) = v-10

But you want to have only one variable, so you set for v what we had earlier v=2s

3(s-10) = 2s-10

Then only equivalenform:

3s-30 = 2s-10 /+30 /-2s

= 20

Son is 20. After v=2s the father is 40.

I do not understand exactly what is to be incomprehensible about the approach to the solution. I can’t explain it better than it says.

What exactly do you understand?

You create an overview table, in the case with father and son.

You call the son, and then solve it as in the example.
