Make your own mead?

I want to make my first mead soon, but every guide is different. Some websites say I need precision measuring equipment, while others say it's just honey, water, and yeast in a bottle (of course, there's a bit more to it, but it's much simpler than some other websites). Does anyone have experience with this and can help a bit? (And can I just throw in cinnamon and apples, for example, to suit the season, or is there more to it?) Thanks for all the replies 🙂

That's normal. 🙂

If you're just starting out, I'd keep it simple and not worry about the instruments (refractometers, acidometers, etc.). A slightly more accurate kitchen scale might be worth considering.

Does anyone have experience in this area and can help a bit?

Yup. If you have specific questions, just ask.

  1. Yes, you can.
  2. For the season, a little orange peel, cloves and cardamom are also suitable.

For a 5 liter brew, I use:

  • Orange peel (but make sure it's organic, so there aren't too many pesticides in the peel)
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 0.5 cm ginger, freshly sliced
  • 1 tsp cardamom
  • 1 tsp cloves (whole)
  • If necessary, cut up 1 red apple into small pieces and add it with the peel.

After that, you'll need a LOT of patience. My cherry mead, which was finished yesterday, took its time this time: 3.5 months in total…
