Magnolias are not growing or blooming, what should I do?

Hello,

I bought two magnolias in autumn 2020 (approx. 160cm tall). In the first year, both barely grew, but bloomed beautifully in 2021. One of them had its roots nibbled on by mice in 2021 (I found tunnels and mouse holes around the plant). Neither of them bloomed in 2021, had hardly any foliage and rather pale, yellow-green foliage…and currently no flower buds either. Growth in 2021 and 2022 was virtually zero.

what can and should I do?

Can the plants still be saved or should I start over with two small ones from a trusted nursery?
Both are in the sun almost all day long; I enriched the soil with rhododendron soil and fertilized it with horn shavings.

Ideas and opinions are welcome

Best wishes and a few peaceful days

In the case of such severe growth and flowering disorders, it is almost always due to the fact that the plant cannot form roots, especially the important microroots.

The plant takes care of itself, it’s just survival.

The two most common reasons, besides the case that the earth is completely unsuitable, are:

The wind often bends the plants so strongly that the new roots tear off again and again.

Wühlmäuse eats the roots away.

The plants recover quickly when these causes are fixed.
New plants do not solve the problem!

For 2-3 years, support piles can be used against wind.

Fighting the winds is more difficult. It may be that they are gone next season (Mauswiesel).
The wreath holes are often flooded with water (drain water?, garden hose). Nässe don’t like the mice, especially since they still have their boys down there.

Thank you, I’m gonna put some support piles in and connect the plants. They do not actually stand full of wind. Is there anything else to consider in the earth or in fertilization?

My Magnolias grow very well in heavy earth (high clay content). I don’t fertilize and let her grow. I mean, Magnolias are useless about Earth.

Plants do not blossom when they are fighting for survival or what is missing. If they have not grown properly, which will be quite sure in mice, then they do not blossom. Patience, support with water in dryness, fertilizers

Also here the same questions: votes location, soil and irrigation?
