A machete is just a big knife.

If you can handle the knife sharpener correctly (e.g. not exert too much pressure on the cutting edge while pulling through), you can also sharpen the machete.

With your machete the cutting edge has quite a “off” with all the outbursts. You should also consider what kind of grinding makes sense for such a tool. This is not a scalpel or kitchen knife, because a grinding as with another chopping tool (beil) can be the better choice. And you don’t get that with such a sharpener (or only with the exposed ceramic stone free hand).

It could make sense to miss a completely new touch with a band grinder. Where you go more need to know exactly what you’re doing and what you’re looking for (e.g., don’t let it get hot, so that you don’t change the hardening of the steel).

Alternatively, a set of grinding stones and the cutting edge would be completely rework by hand, lasts accordingly.

In the state of the machete – that would be a huge effort. The cut has suffered quite well. There’s no need to remove the shingles. This is not easy/light with grinding stones.

Problem on the knife sharpener: the blade grinds the same as one would grind a kitchen knife (i.e. work-sharf). But this would not really make sense here: even if the sharpening works, you’ll get shots in it. In this case it is about the sharp angle. So I wouldn’t take the shepherd.

Recommendation

  • use a grinding machine (band grinder also goes, of course, but is more difficult to handle). It is best to use a wet grinding machine so that the steel does not glow.
  • but before that look good at Youtube, what a cut must look like – there are plenty of mouth, but also very good tips. Really good to watch!
  • then look out the right grinding angle – and now start the sharpening.

Try out, you can’t do much wrong. The steel is probably of low quality. The cutting edge has broken out strongly, that should not be so.

I think it would work if you did it right

You can also sharpen the cheap thing with a flex. But make sure that the steel does not glow.

A machete is nothing but a larger knife. But with the amount and size of shingles you will need quite a long time.
