M.2 SSD too warm?

Hello, I recently swapped my 1 TB Samsung SSD for a 2 TB WD Black SSD. I immediately noticed the temperature difference between the two SSDs. When I'm doing absolutely nothing on the PC, sensor 1 on the WD Black SSD is at 62°C. The previous Samsung SSD, on the other hand, was below 40°C.

Do you think this is normal or is the SSD defective?

In the picture you can also see the other Samsung SSD that I have in my PC.

I've already tried it with and without a heat sink. I don't notice any temperature difference.

The WD Black has higher reading and writing rates than the 970 Evo Plus, which, in simple terms, results in higher power consumption, and this is proportional to waste heat. It is therefore logical that the faster a data carrier with flash memory is, it becomes even warmer. Of course, it is assumed that there are always the same framework conditions as, for example, ambient temperature or cooling solution.

So there is everything as it should be, and there is nothing to warm. NVME SSDs can be operated easily at ~75°C to ~80°C. It is only when these temperatures are exceeded that you should think, but even then nothing is damaged, but simply throttled to power.

Hello Bobs,

62 degrees are fine, the limit is at about 80 degrees where the SSD becomes too hot and the durability suffers. Modern SSDs have high performance and become hotter than older SSDs.

Of course, you can put such a mini heat sink on the SSD. 😊

PS: You write, the heat sink didn’t help? Try:

  • Another heat sink
  • Or will the motherboard / your PC generally become too warm?

Hello Bobs,

All right, I’ve just researched and it’s more often so that modern SSDs get hot and don’t use the cow body much.

62 in the Idle I also found a lot, but as I said, SSDs are designed to 80 degrees, they only clock down from 80 degrees.

So everything is fine with 60 degrees. 🙏

When someone tells me my mistakes, I’m about to learn from it. But no one was willing to talk about what made the situation even more difficult.

I don’t know you personally and I would never raise any claims about you like you did about me. It is important to me to remain fair and respectful, even if there are differences of opinion.
