Is a telescope worth it?

Hello,

I'm very fascinated by astrophotography and would like to buy a telescope. I've already sought advice; the total cost is approximately €2,000 (including GoTo, autoguider, etc.).

Now the question is: Is it worth the money? It's a lot of money, after all.

If your enthusiasm persists and the telescope doesn’t stand around and dust after a short time, it’s worth spending some money. I used a quite great device (8 inch Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain, still without Goto-Automatic) for about 15 years sporadically (visually and for recordings and also for an astronomy course). But when I realized that it was almost just around, I gave it away (to school, where other colleagues can now use it for astronomy courses).

You can only decide. The starry sky is beautiful and if that’s your hobby, and you really like to watch every night, buy it. If it’s more a toy, then I’m sure there’s something cheaper.
The purchase decision is of course also influential by other factors. income, reserves, expenses, etc.

We don’t know this, so the answer is difficult. If you have the 2,000€ left, it is definitely a nice investment 🙂

Basically, a telescope is not worth if you cannot use it. The fact that GoTo and Autoguider seem to be more important than the parameters of optics tells me that you don’t really want to deal with it, but just click a few times and then want to surprise. If that’s the case, it’s definitely out of business. Then you can also googlen and look at corresponding images.

If you are unsure, I would first advise you to buy a simple binoculars and a star map and start exploring the sky. If this fascinates you, you can go the next step and get a bigger telescope. If that’s too boring, you can assume 99% that the money was thrown out. Without this fascination, you will not get so far to run your telescope decently, despite GoTo and Autoguider… unfortunately, this is the case for many.

However, if you notice that this is your topic, you will deal with the following topics:

  • What do you want to watch from where?
  • How much time are you ready to invest?
  • Do you have enough financial space to buy accessories as needed?
  • Is your ability to suffer enough not to let you be discouraged by setbacks?

With these answers you can go the next step.

Exactly. The location also plays a role. In a brightly illuminated city, the best telescope does not bring anything.

Goto-Automatics today I find it very useful and practical (see my above answer) and an investment for it not as money thrown out.

Depends on how serious you want to run the hobby. Otherwise, the stuff is unused afterwards and it’s really a lot of money.

Please do not make the mistake and start without know how with a clean equipment.

a good astro-fernglas e.g. 12×80 for a photo tripod, cost approx. 200-300 €

when you licked blood, you can still upgrade. but learn the secrets of polar-alignment before goto remains unsuccessful. there is also something completely fully automatic for the money, but is that fun?
