Is it worth working for a year between two children?

I'm taking two years of parental leave, after which our daughter will go to daycare. This costs us €450 a month. As a part-time worker, I would earn about €800.

If our little one didn't go to daycare, but started kindergarten at age 3, we would save the €450 a month. Then I could get a part-time job and work when my husband is home with her.

We would also like to have a second child when our daughter is 3-4 years old.

Would be a parent bill….

Otherwise, I personally find Kita with 3 actually quite late – especially because a second child is planned. At some point, the kids are not at home (yet alone), want more and other inputs than they can deliver themselves and also usually interact very much with (approximately) peers. So much other things can be learned when you can teach them – even if you are constantly trying to get in touch with parents.

And from mum sight, it makes a pregnancy (especially in the last third, but who knows how it basically goes…) easier if you have the big child well looked after out of the house for a few hours without having to go through a reconciliation. The same applies for the first time with infant.

Do this with the minijob, because the first 3 years are enormously important for the development of a child!

These are actually two different questions:

  1. Do you want to take care of your child at home for two or three years? What is good now and what is not, the spirits divorce. It certainly depends on the child. The kita or day mother is not well suited for every child, not every child is already with two so far that it can go to the kita. Ultimately, it’s your choice.
  2. Does it pay financially? The answer is clear: yes. One is the 350€ income you can earn. But more importantly, since you are planning a second child, the parental allowance is. Parental allowance is calculated from net income 12 months before birth and each month in which there was no income counts with 0€ into the calculation. This would then mean the minimum amount of 300€ plus possibly sibling bonus. (Bisterbonus is only available until child 1 is three years old). However, if you worked in the months before the birth of child 2 and had 800€ average net, this is well 550€ parental allowance, i.e. 250€ more. Also to consider if you give your child to kindergarten with 3 would also cost, but if you were with child 2 in parental leave, you would only have the 300€ parental allowance to cover kindergarten costs.
