Location for nest box on roadside?
I'd like to hang a nesting box. The entrance hole should be 3 cm, so maybe for tits.
If I consider that the nest box should receive morning sun, but not full midday sun, and that the box should be hung at a height of at least 2 meters, I'm left with a suspension on the house wall facing the front yard. The yard is 3 meters deep and is located on a moderately busy street.
The direction of the entrance hole would then be east-southeast. Is it a problem if the nest box is located so close to a road and further away from the food and water sources behind the house?
There are also plants, ivy, "lawns" and small hedges in the front garden.
Thanks for answers.
The direction of the entrance hole does not matter to my observation. The most important thing is that the nest box does not “boil” in the midday heat, which can hurt the young birds very much. Besides, he should be stable enough to resist Marders and Elstern or Crows.
Then the birds like it when a bush, tree or similar is nearby where they can land. That could be your hedge. The street doesn’t bother her. The fact that they have to fly around the house for food search is probably also incidental. A few meters more or less play no role, main thing, they find enough food. A garden as close as possible to nature is important for this. Perfect lawn or, even worse, “Schottergartens” are food deserts for birds.
After a marten cleaned the bird’s brood several times, I built marder-proof nest boxes. These have a pre-built entrance hole, so that the nest is far enough in the rear part of the box, where the marten, but also eclipses and the like do not come. Since then, I have been happy every year about the good breeding success of some bird pairs.

(My boxes look a bit different, the picture should only illustrate the idea.)
If the flight path to the box is still within the garden (no direct danger of collision), this is not a problem…
Got here big elders right on the street, there’s always a lot of fun…
Birds like other animals can also distinguish between “harmless” traffic that remains on the road and walking path, and the cat that shone through the garden or the doofen garden owner that remains in front of the box…
In order that the latter may not become too much, a visual protection towards the road is usually helpful (authorized bush or so completely…)
By the way: 30mm cf. https://www.vogeltreff24.de/info/Nistkasten-Einflugoeffnung.html = 28mm fits for blue horses and other smaller species, the more competitive cabbage ice etc. need 32mm etc.
Hello,
if it’s not exactly a busy road, so residential zone 30 is no problem at all!
With me, 4 houses are attached to antenna masts directly on the road!
