Lens selection?
Hi guys, I want to buy one of these lenses? My camera is the R7
I will use the 24-105 for video and general use and the 100-400mm for aviation and wildlife.
- EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II USM
- RF 24-105mm f/4L IS USM
- EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6 L IS USM
- EF 100-400mm 1:4.5-5.6L IS II US
- RF 100-400mm
Thank you in advance 🙂
Hello
the RF 24-105/4 L IS USM has the advantage over the EF types that it uses all RF special functions (video) and in about twice as fast foused (Ok whether now 0.15 or 0.3 seconds does little off sports and wildlife). In addition, it is more compact and around 100 grams lighter but also a “full plastic optics” without the usual L Feeling.
Both optics have approximately the same UVP/new price, while the EF optics is cheaper by 150-200€. As far as I know the EF 24-105/4 L IS USM II at the CPS 2026 as EOL, then many professionals will shoot the optics or make a last great service or revision for the next 5 years of use.
The EF 24-105/4l IS USM II has been optimized for the 5Ds and has the main advantage of the better edge imaging performance of this with an APS-C sensor nix. In addition, the RF 24-105/4 has a much better edge performance than the EF predecessor, which is easy to test/determine as a user of an R5. But as said the R7 user has nothing of it there is only no inexpensive alternative for the package. The advantage of the RF 24-105 to DX is enough for wedding reportage part including group pictures. For small stand offices it may have too little wide angle. There is still a lack of portrait optics because you can take the EF 50/1.8 STM or EF 50/1.4 USM
On the topic Canon 100-400, I’ve written myself “fussily” several times.
The RF 100-400 is sufficient for airplanespotting and animals in the wildlife park/zoo or in the seating situation. Although it is already 200mm behind the diffraction limit of the 32.5MP sensor, the Canon DLO calculates the diffraction errors and aircraft and animals are central motifs so in the middle area the OK/usable. The diffraction problem comes from the edge and has arrived in the middle without DLO from approximately aperture 13. Of course, the combination R7 with RF 100-400 is “senseless” or actually the R7 in the RF system is useless as a universal camera because Canon does not have any meaningful RFS optics. That was the case with the 7D and 7DII. The R7 is designed as a professional “teleconverter camera” to RF 70-200, RF 100-500 and RF 100-300. Canon needs RFS optics at the level of Fuji, Leica or Pentax to make a 90D or R7 as a fully-fledged compact/travel system “Sinn”. It won’t happen. After all, Canon now has prematurely accentuated Sigma DN optics so that you have even compact/light R7 suitable optics.
In 2018, Mitarai announced that the Canon will no longer make the mistake of offering consumer optics and consumer cameras in a professional system and that after 2023 only the DSLM systems remain. The large/heavy small image R Profi System and the small/light half format M amateur system. In 2018, the M system will be expanded with new optics for M5II, M6II and M7 with 32.5MP sensors
For sports action and wildlife you take the RF 100-500. Anyone who had used this is no longer going back to EF 100-400 Oldtimertechnik
Between RF 100-400 and RF 100-500, the two EF 100-400 or the EF 70-300 IS USM II Nano or the EF 70-300L IS USM must be used until Canon builds one of the zig objective patents in the gap. Probably comes an RF 50-350.
First of all, the focal points of the optics after the turnover should be set with optics. If you make sports report, you won’t get around the EF 100-400 L IS USM II as a “emergency solution” until you have the budget for the RF 100-500. If you don’t deserve enough with the 100-400 optics, you have to think of something or make something more profitable. The crunch point is the competition has already ” upgraded” or from below the Prosumerbrides of Lumix and Sony are eating at market and have lower costs.
The nasty when photographing is in the end you cannot buy success or sales through camera technology. For a good photographer there are always chances of producing good selling images off the mainstream or the Supertele pack of agency photographers. This is often enough for cheap technology. You just have to stand in the right place at the right time and the light has to fit. Clearly for the shooting photo of the sports picture, the agencies have occupied the best places, which are simply predictable pictures that you just have to cancel. This is the intern after 2-3 weeks.
Now is the question that we should tell you what to get from them?
You should choose a focal length first. No one can decide what you want to photograph now.
Consider that 24-105mm on the R7 full-format equivalent corresponds to a 38-168mm, that is not really much wide angle unless you strap it to a speed booster (and that only goes with the EF version). Better for Allround is an adapted Sigma 17-70mm Contemporary or Canon 17-55mm f/2.8.
Which one of the 100-400mm you should take is best decided by purse. The EF L-Class lenses are better but also heavier, the second version is logically better than the first.
Can I also take the first generation EF 24-105 is and then add a Ronnin 3? And it will probably be the 2nd gene
As I said, you have to decide what to do with your money. I’d be honest about using something too hard on a gimbal. And as I said, too little wide angle, so you yourself will be difficult to vloggen.
I also don’t want to blog more photo, professional videoshoot for blog I have the EF-S 10-18mm
From the abdomen and exclusion:
The RF 100-400 mm appears to me at an APS-C with a speed of 32 MP if your motifs are photographed in the dusk. I prefer the EF 100-400mm 1:4,5-5,6L IS II USM because I have it. 😉
So I’ll take the two. I also tried the gene 😉
As far as the Canon EF 24-105mm f/4l IS ii USM is concerned, the spirits differ, see https://www.dslr-forum.de/threads/canon-24-105-l-version-1-oder-2.1856898/
I have version II, but I cannot offer a comparison to I.
Thank you.
The price. 😉
In https://www.traumflieger.de/reports/objective tests/canon lens full format/Canon-EF-24-105mm-4L-IS-USM-II-im-Test:1264.html the differences
There are even more small differences in it and you have to decide which one shows you the better price/performance ratio and what you put more value on.
What is the big difference?
Joa….then a lot of fun and success. I wouldn’t do it.

There is no reasonable question.
