The distinction is simple: For a comparison, you need the word “like”. IMMER. (Here it would be: “He was pale like a body.”) If it is missing, it is a metaphor.

And then also here to the point: A personification must be a noun to IMMER. “Leichenblass” is, however, an adjective. 😉
