Detect drive C hard drive in computer?
Hello,
The hard drive in my C drive is only 479 GB. I'd like to replace it with a larger one.
Is this so easy and how do I identify this hard drive?
Is there a way to transfer the data somehow (I don't know how relevant the data on drive C is?).
Alternatively, could you connect an external hard drive via USB and then assign it as drive C extension?
Thanks for the help and sorry for the uninformed questions 😅
This depends on whether the “Drive C:” displayed on Windows is a separate hard drive or whether your “Drive C:” and “Drive D:” (if you have multiple drives in Windows) are physically on the same hard drive.
This would have to be resolved first. This depends on the precise further procedure.
You can mirror your old hard drive to the new one.
How to do this can you read here: https://www.computerbild.de/artikel/cb-Tipps-PC-Hardware-Festplatte-spiegel-unter-Windows-10-31590619.html
As a rule, C: the boot hard drive, i.e. there is Windows installed. If you simply exchange it, the new one is of course nothing on it and you would have to reinstall Windows.
You can also previously clone your old hard drive to the new ones, for which a number of apps are available. If everything runs correctly, you then copied the contents of the old to the new bootable.
Maybe you even have a slot in your computer open for a second hard drive? If you don’t have to take them out and restart your operating system, or clon the hard drive. However, write your Bitlocker password, otherwise the data is no longer accessible.
Thank you for your answer!
You know how I recognize the hard drive? Are there two different (drive C and D) or is that one? I don’t know
A hard drive can only be “recognized” by se, even if one is in it, which is not the case with most computers. You’ll have to disassemble the computer and see if a slot is still free on the motherboard. Sometimes you’re lucky and the manufacturer left the option open. If you want to see if a second is available in the Start menu at Windows diskmgmt. msc. You have to go there when you’ve used a second hard drive.
If you have already installed Windows, just right-click the Windows icon in the taskbar and select Disk Management. All built-in hard drives are displayed there.
