Laptop or tablet for electronics?

Hey, I'm starting my electrical engineering degree in October and already own a laptop. The problem is that it's way too big and quite heavy. Plus, I have a lot of personal data and stuff on it. I can take it to university, but I'd rather use it at home.

In this case, would it make more sense to buy a tablet with a keyboard that I can also type on? Not only would it be a much cheaper option, but it also seems very practical for everyday university life.

I know I need to be able to program with it and it needs to have a lot of storage space, but I'd rather take an external storage device/USB drive with me instead of my laptop?

Optionally, I could do without taking my laptop or any other device with me for the first two semesters, but with a course like this, it doesn't seem like the best idea.
