Lamotrigine is an anti-epileptic and a so-called “mood stabilizer” (stimulation stabilizer). It is approved for the treatment of epilepsy and as prophylaxis of depressive episodes of a bipolar disorder. However, it is often also used as an additional medication for unipolar depression.

The drug must be metered in slowly. With too rapid dose increase, the risk of a very rare but serious side effect increases. This is a dangerous reaction of the skin.

I was prescribed to Lamotrigin as an additional drug against my treatment-resistant depression. I had few side effects and they were relatively harmless. I could notice a slight antidepressive and mood-stabilizing effect…. however, this was not really overwhelming. I’m not a very good example, though. In the years of my severe depression, I had to try out countless medicines until I found a combination that at least helped (and still helps).
