Today, most of the time, because cheaper than a complete vehicle repainting.

What else is structural lacquer, the surface is similar to the grain of e.g. buffalo leather:

The original meaning of such a coating is to achieve a surface which is as solid as possible and is resistant to abrasion. In the meantime, however, it is also applied, for example, in the case of off-road vehicles which do not even go into the terrain, i.e. because of the “coolness factor”.
