Child benefit during work and travel?

Hello,

I'm 18 and planning a work and travel program, so I quit my voluntary social year at the end of March. I'll start university in the winter semester.
Will I receive any child benefit during this time?

Do I have to register as unemployed with the employment agency or something similar?

Thanks

If you register unemployed, you must also be available to the Federal Employment Agency.

There is no child benefit for Work & Travel.

Child benefit entitlement also for the period of “Work and travel”? (lohnsteuer-kompakt.de)

The Bundesfinanzhof has decided that participation in a “Work and travel” program is merely an ordinary stay abroad, which is not considered a “vocational training” and therefore does not justify entitlement to child benefit. A claim for child benefit is only valid for a language stay abroad if it is accompanied with a theoretical-systematic language instruction (BFH Decision of 14.9.2009, III B 119/08).

….

So NO child money

As a rule, you don’t have a child’s allowance because you don’t have an education:
