Does anyone know this horror film I'm looking for?

Here's the thing: As a child, I once walked into the living room late one night, and my mother had fallen asleep on the couch. A horror movie was playing, and just as I walked past the television, a truly disturbing scene came on, one that I still can't get out of my head.

So: A man and a woman are in a house and have found a secret staircase in their basement. The man goes down into the darkness. When the man doesn't come back, the woman follows him. She finds the man, full of fear and panic, in a narrow hallway. Shortly thereafter, a disturbing monster suddenly comes from behind, grabs the man's head, and smashes it against the wall until it's bloody and smashed. I hope this information is enough for someone to help me. 🙂
