No article – looking for a general rule?
- The organs perform tasks.
- The brain controls movements.
- The eyes see things.
- The stomach digests food.

I'm looking for a general rule that explains why there are no articles before the words "tasks", "movements", "things", "food".
My suggestion:
No article if something is meant generally or unspecifically; article if it is meant concretely or specifically.
I agree with your proposal.
Yes, “the”, “the” and “that” are certain articles that indicate a particular object. The indefinite articles are among others “a” and “a” (an organ, a cat…) in the singular.
The indefinite plural has no article in the German.
(In French, “the” assumes this function, e.g.
Functions = fonction)
